Motorhome Facts thread

I recently mentioned this site on the popular motorhome forum "MotorhomeFacts"

The admin of the site have since suspended my account after accusations from the site admin - so much for a right to reply

This was the text posted

right I took a look into our search for sites website and data, i also googled it and found other posts on other forums with same sort of promotional postings. I cannot condone links to that site, there appears to be a large amount of entries that have been taken from other repositories online such as Campingcar Infos / France Passion / ACSI, I am pretty sure these organisations will not want their data (ACSI sell theirs / license it and so does Campingcar, FP actively goes out of its way to stop users publicising them) and the poster seems to have sat down with the organisations books / data and simply copied them all into a central database with a web interface or purchased data which is for personal use and then uploaded it to this site ! If i did that their would be hell to pay !, I could today go and pay and download the campingcar datasets and within a few minutes import them into mhf no doubt but it would be morally wrong if not probably illegal as well / copyright infringement I am sorry but I don't buy into the hobby site reasoning, any developer can setup an offline webserver and database and test it and use it, it doesn't have to be online, if it is a hobby for himself then why go on all the forums and publicise it unfortunately from experience I know that many times new users come to MHF, post links to a site that is FREE / None Commercial / Hobby etc, get back links, get traffic and then all of a sudden it becomes commercial with paid access / advertisers or some other commercial system. Feel free to build your site search for sites, but be aware I will be checking your entries to see if any of MHF entries appear in there, and I am sure the other organisations will do the same once I let them know about your database !!

My response to each part..

Firstly I understand the site admins desire to protect his own database and not have alternatives being posted. - I mentioned this point in my second post to Zebedee in why I had not subscribed to the site - that post has since been removed along with others that said they actually liked this site.

But I feel there are double standards being applied here.

FP actively goes out of its way to stop users publicising them
If this is the case, then why does the MHF database have a France Passion category?

Before this, I had already written to France Passion asking for their view on this subject, citing examples of other sites including 'Motorhomefacts', 'Campingcar infos', 'All the Aires' that are already displaying the coordinates of France passion sites

To date I have had no response from France Passion (over 3 months)

There are a number of issues here...
How does the MHF admin then explain the sites listed by the 'member' autosites?

Searching on MHF reveals this is exactly what he is doing, scouring datasets and addding sites without them being submitted by a MHF member

These listings are usually accompanied by the 'exact' wording used on the relative clubs site, with no reviews. Where did these listings come from?

ACSI, Camping cheque do not own any campsites, they are mearly payment partners and the data sets are freely available directly from their website listing coords and site names.

What they dont supply is the accompanying data that makes these sites usefull such as facilities, reviews, images etc. these all have to be sourced elsewhere. I get the data from the campsites own webpage

I will be checking your entries to see if any of MHF entries appear in there, and I am sure the other organisations will do the same once I let them know about your database
This is the best line and made me smile
So the scenario is... MHF (or anyone else for that matter) add a new site to their database. Do they then own that co ordinate and no one else has a right to list it? The same site appears in searchforsites, did I copy it from their data? or did I visit it? did I get the info from a book? did I download it from POI factory or the many POI databases out there? or did I just find it with the power of google?

I would love to hear the conversation he has with the likes of France Passion

Have you seen this website listing your sites? -but please dont look at my site listing your sites

Or the conversation to ACSI, "here is someone freely promoting your business with links directly to your site", "don't look a my site showing the same and not linking to your site."

I believe the only people who have a right to complain are the campsite owners themselves which let us not forget are all buisnesses
